The Gene Ontology software group has developed a web-based system to allow annotators to quickly add new terms into the ontology following a number of pre-defined templates. We use OWL reasoning to ensure that terms are logically consistent and added to the correct place in the ontology. TermGenie has also been adapted to a number of other ontologies, such as the cell ontology and the mammalian phenotype ontology. The system is available at termgenie.org and is described in a new publication in the open-access journal JBMS as part of a series of articles on ontology software.
